“In recent years, the best of the Killerby wines. The wine has been given the ultimate rating of five gold stars by Robin Bradley. The wine is 100 per cent barrel fermented in new and one-year-old French barriques and taken through malolactic fermentation.” James Halliday, Winepros.

"You have to hand it to Killerby.... Its taut and savoury white wines are consistently first rate, often presenting surprising complexity and definition."
Jeremy Oliver, Australian Wine Annual 2005.

Vineyard notes: 70% of the fruit for this wine was sourced from our Margaret river vineyard whilst the remaining 30% is from the original Killerby family vineyard at Geographe.

Harvesting notes: The fruit was harvested over February and March 2005.

Nose: Initial aromas of fleshy stone fruit and citrus give way to toasty, mealy oak nuances.

Palate: The palate for this wine reveals fresh stone fruit, citrus and pear like flavours. These flavours are complimented by a creamy, toasty richness that delivers a palate of considerable weight and texture. A cut of fine and refreshing acidity threads through the palate to give a wine of balance and persistence.

Here's what they've said about the Chardonnay 2003:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

" One of the Best of Style. Firm/fleshy/cheesy style. A hint of Hessian-like characters to the pear and lime nose. Good balanced, creamy, nutty oak and bacon flavours with nice crisp acidity." Winestate magazine Annual Issue 2005-2006.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“An austere, stylish and crafted chardonnay whose pungent, creamy aromas of melon and citrus fruit overlie nuances of oatmeal, tobacco and grilled nuts, with lightly smoky vanilla oak. Reined in by its tight-knit acidity, its palate of peach, melon and grapefruit flavour remains elegant and dry, finely balanced and savoury.”  Jeremy Oliver Onwine July 2004.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Very much in the fine delicate style that has been developed at Killerby over the years. Gets the full barrel-fermentation treatment after whole-bunch pressing. This is a modern style with deft use of oak, fine intensely flavoured fruit and a great mouth feel. A slightly nutty citrus tang is appealing on the middle to long finish." Ray Jordan, Guide to Western Australian Wine 2004-05.

“A really good Chardonnay at around $30. Still a youthful lemony yellow. Lots of classic varietal aromas of white nectarine, honey peach and ripe melon. Quite complex with pronounced oak which dissipates quickly to reveal layers of upfront but not over the top fruit flavours all delivered with elegance on the palate. Smooth luscious primary fruit characters abound with very good supporting soft fruit acid structure and seamlessly integrated oak. Very drinkable but shall develop over 3-5 years.” Paul Ippolito, Sydney, 2006.

Five Stars—Amongst the continent’s best.” Robin Bradley, Australia and New Zealand Wine Vintages (Little Gold Book) 17th ed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Killerby is a Western Australian winery that has produced an excellent example of what the modern Australian style Chardonnay should be like.

Pale to light straw in colour, the aroma is tight, elegant and restrained and consists of tropical fruit, melon and peach with a bouquet of cashew, butterscotch essence and subtle vanillan oak.  A beautifully balanced wine with all elements in sync.  The winemaking is just superb.  Tight lean acid finish ensues, seamlessly blending in with the potent fruit characters and integrating with the French oak influence.

A complex wine that promises good things in the future.  Cellar 3-5 years with confidence.  Drink with avocado and prawn salad.  Priced very respectably at around $30 per bottle and available by telephoning 1-800 655 722 or by visiting www.killerby.com.au"  Paul Ippolito 2005.

CUSTOMER COMMENTS...

"On visiting the cellar door for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Chardonnay - having purchased extensively in Margaret River over the last 6 months (and mostly Chardonnay around the $30-40 mark).

The colour is still youthful, despite its 2003 vintage. We've been buying 2004/05 Chardonnays elsewhere, and I have little faith in the age-worthiness of Australian Chardonnays in general (i.e. over 5 years). However, the Killerby has developed white peach and nectarine characters, very much in balance with the savoury oak characters, and just seems to be hanging together so well. 'Balanced' is probably the keyword, along with 'class'.

On perusing the Killerby website after my purchases, I was not surprised to find that the winery itself promotes the wine as 'drink until early 2007' (i.e. now). I think it is fabulous now, and would not be surprised if it went another year or two - but why wait?"  Allan Wilkerson, Morley WA.
