"The Other Top Performer in the Killerby
Stable.”
James Halliday
The grapes for this wine came from Dr Killerby’s original vineyard planted in 1973 and from the Margaret River vineyard planted in 1977. Dr Killerby originally obtained the vine cuttings from his friend, Dr Bill Pannell, at Moss Wood. He then planted them at Killerby with help from his young son, Ben Killerby.
These vines were all
cane pruned by hand. A small proportion of this wine
underwent barrel fermentation to provide complexity.
The balance was fermented on
skins. The wine was then matured
in new and one year old French oak barrels for 18
months. These oak barrels were made
in
France especially for Killerby by
Seguin Moreau, Francois
Freres and Taransaud. |

This wine is a classic ripe, scented varietal wine with an excellent cellaring tradition. The colour is a deep red. The nose has attractive briar, cigar-box and blackcurrant fruit aromas. The palate shows stylish blackcurrant, berry and chocolate flavours with length and depth. French oak maturation has filled out the palate and given a subtle smoky background. This is a wine that will repay careful cellaring for 10 years. The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon is a new release and has not yet been reviewed. Of previous vintages: 2003 Vintage: “Leafy, scented, briar and cigar box aromas; light-to medium-bodied, with well-defined blackcurrant/cassis flavours; good length. Screwcap. 13.9% alc. Rating: 90/100. Drink 2013 $24” James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2007.
2002 Vintage: “Honest,
early-drinking cabernet with a lightly musky and herbal
aroma of sweet, slightly jammy raspberries and red plums
over spicy, cedary oak. It’s smooth and creamy, with
vibrant, if uncomplicated red fruit flavours over an
assertive spine and cedar/vanilla oak.”
Jeremy
Oliver, OnWine July 2004. “The Cabernet is the
other top performer in the Killerby stable…. Over the
years it has accumulated seven trophies and innumerable gold
medals.” James Halliday, Wine Companion. |

2001 Vintage: “There’s
no holding back on this sucker.
It’s got the safety off and ready to fire.
Solid chunky blend of Geographe and Margaret River
cabernet with a deep intensity on the middle palate, fine
tannins and plenty of French oak for the long haul. The fruit is superb and this is a wine that will handle
another ten years in the cellar. 91/100” Ray
Jordan, Wine – Western Australia’s Best, p. 47. |

2000 Vintage: Jeremy
Oliver, Australian Wine Annual, “A
powerful, polished Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 is the pick of
the current crop from Killerby, a winery that is beginning
to reassert itself as one of the leading pack in Western
Australia. This is a cabernet for the future with deep, dark
expression of ripe fruit flavours, very firm tannins and a
suggestion of dark olives and bitumen. 1999 vintage: “5 Glasses – 94/100” James Halliday: “as close to perfection as the real world will allow”. Order a sample bottle online, or take your
wine in a three pack or six pack. |
