Red Wine Pill the Next Big Thing

The main attraction of the health benefits of red wine is... well, you get to drink red wine.

So why, then, would you want to skip the drinking step to get the health benefits? It’s beyond me, but scientists in Europe are beavering away to create a pill from cabernet sauvignon that will help prevent cancer.

Work at the University of Leicester and the Pavese Pharma Biochemical Institute in Italy is aimed at producing a pill containing the red wine compounds resveratrol and anthocyanins to combat cancer. The pill could be on sale as early as 2010.

Scientists at the London School of Medicine say that the best grape for health purposes is cabernet sauvignon which has high levels of resveratrol and polyphenols.

Polyphenols are found in cabernet sauvignon grapes and these compounds decrease the production of ET-1 in artery walls. In the tests, there was a strong correlation between the inhibited production of ET-1 and the amount of polyphenols within the wine, with cabernet having the highest levels.

The pill would contain these healthy ingredients. The New Scientist magazine reports: "Freeze-drying and compacting the mix leaves a tablet with all the benefits of a glass of wine, say the inventors."

The benefits of red wine were discovered in the Seventies after researchers noticed the French ate large amounts of fatty food but suffered lower levels of heart disease than Britain and the US.

The research has caused excitement, and where there is excitement, people are sure to cash in. Here is the blurb from the new book, “The Red Wine Pill”:

“Is the 125-year life span about to become common? Scientists find the genetic switch for longevity and a natural molecule that turns it on.

There is a genetic mechanism in all living cells that is far more powerful than any medicine or vitamin that can prolong the life of living cells.

Now scientists discover a small molecule, found in nature, that turns on the longevity switch.

Learn why there is a tremendous upsurge in the number of centenarians around the world, and why millions of people will live beyond the age of 120 years.

Learn why people on two islands, Okinawa and Sardinia, live beyond the age of 100, but for different reasons.

Learn why aging researchers recently began talking about the possibility of an anti-aging pill.

Learn how new discoveries shed light on an environmental phenomenon that has puzzled health researchers for over 70 years.

Learn why Methuselah experienced such unusual longevity.

Learn why the French experience such unusual health and longevity despite a diet rich in fat and calories.

Learn how a pill can now mimic the healthy properties of calorie restriction and red wine consumption.”

I don’t know how scientific a book is if it claims that a biblical character that may or may not have existed is evidence for its propositions, but if you believe the hype, you can download the resveratrol e-book from http://www.naturalhealthlibrarian.com/ebook.asp?page=Resveratrol Wine Pill
